Speech By George S. Patton Jr.
3rd Army Speech - England
31 MAY 1944 - 6th Armored Division

Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. Men, all this stuff you've heard about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love to fight. All real Americans, love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball players, the toughest boxers ...

Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in Hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans. Now, an army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The biggest bastards who wrote that stuff about individuality for the Saturday Evening Post, don't know anything more about real battle than they do about fornicating. Now we have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit, and the best men in the world. You know ...

My God, I actually pity those poor bastards we're going up against. My God, I do. We're not just going to shoot the bastards, we're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun bastards by the bushel. Now some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you'll chicken out under fire. Don't worry about it. I can assure you that you'll all do your duty. The Nazis are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill their blood, shoot them in the belly. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo, that a moment before was your best friends face, you'll know what to do. Now there's another thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position. We're not holding anything, we'll let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly, and we're not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy. We're going to hold onto him by the nose, and we're going to kick him in the ass. We're going to kick the hell out of him all the time, and we're going to go through him like crap through a goose. Now, there's one thing that you men will be able to say when you get back home, and you may thank God for it. Thirty years from now when you're sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee, and he asks you, What did you do in the great World War Two? You won't have to say, Well, I shoveled shit in Louisiana. Alright now, you sons of bitches, you know how I feel. I will be proud to lead you wonderful guys into battle anytime, anywhere. That's all.

Patton's Prayer

"Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies, and establish Thy justice among men and nations. Amen."

Quotes By Patton

"A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week."

"A good solution applied with vigor now is better than a perfect solution applied ten minutes later."

"America loves a winner, and will not tolerate a loser, this is why America has never, and will never, lose a war."

"A pint of sweat will save a gallon of blood."

"I am a soldier, I fight where I am told, and I win where I fight."

"If everybody is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking."

"If I do my full duty, the rest will take care of itself."

       "In case of doubt, attack."

"It’s the unconquerable soul of man, not the nature of the weapon he uses, that insures victory."

"Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way."

"You shouldn't underestimate an enemy, but it is just as fatal to overestimate him."

"Attack rapidly, ruthlessly, viciously, without rest, however tired and hungry you may be, the enemy will be more tire, more hungry. Keep punching."

"In landing operations, retreat is impossible, to surrender is as ignoble as it is foolish… above all else remember that we as attackers have the initiative, we know exactly what we are going to do, while the enemy is ignorant of our intentions and can only parry our blows. We must retain this tremendous advantage by always attacking rapidly, ruthlessly, viciously, and without rest."

"An Army is a team; lives, sleeps, eats, fights as a team. This individual heroic stuff is a lot of crap."

"War is the supreme test of man in which he rises to heights never approached in any other activity."

"No sane man is unafraid in battle, but discipline produces in him a form of vicarious courage."

"A man must know his destiny… if he does not recognize it, then he is lost. By this I mean, once, twice, or at the very most, three times, fate will reach out and tap a man on the shoulder… if he has the imagination, he will turn around and fate will point out to him what fork in the road he should take, if he has the guts, he will take it."

"In war the only sure defense is offense, and the efficiency of the offense depends on the warlike souls of those conducting it."

"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."

"Wars might be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of the men who leads that gains the victory."

"Many, who should know better, think that wars can be decided by soulless machines, rather than by the blood and anguish of brave men."

"Tanks are new and special weapon-newer than, as special, and certainly as valuable as the airplane."

"An incessant change of means to attain unalterable ends is always going on; we must take care not to let these sundry means undue eminence in the perspective of our minds; for, since the beginning, there has been an unending cycle of them, and for each its advocates have claimed adoption as the sole solution of successful war."

"Untutored courage is useless in the face of educated bullets."

"The obvious thing for the cavalryman to do is to accept the fighting machine as a partner, and prepare to meet more fully the demands of future warfare."

"Many soldiers are led to faulty ideas of war by knowing too much about too little."

A Liberation of a French Town Miracle

In the process of liberating a French town from Nazi occupation in WWII, General George S Patton did more than just liberate the town. His actions caused a chain of actions that would out live him because of his death at end of the war.

Lady Abbess Benedict Duss, an American nun, was living in a French monastery in the town occupied by the Nazis. She was hiding in the bell tower from the Gestapo when she saw Gen. Patton's troops march in to liberate the town, and vowed that she would found a monastery in America out of gratitude.

Lady Abbess Benedict Duss founded the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Connecticut in 1947. She decided that every woman who entered must have some gift, talent or profession and must be "equal to or superior to others in her field."

Today it is a unique community of 39 exceptionally bright and gifted women, most of whom attained success in the world before becoming a nun. The median age is around 40, unlike other religious orders in America where the median age of nuns is 69.

This Abbey also has a nun named Delores Hart who was an actress whom was headed for stardom. She acted along with actors like George Hamilton, Stephen Boyd, Jeff Chandler and Elvis Presley. Shortly after playing St. Clare in the movie St Francis of Assisi with Bradford Dillman, she became a cloistered Benedictine nun.

The biggest surprise General George S Patton would find today at the Abbey, if he was living, would be that his granddaughter is a nun here. Tall and slender, Mother Margaret Georgina wears round glasses and a black headband dotted with white stars over her black veil. When she first visited the Abbey in the 70s as a flower child, embarrassed by her military family, she did not know that her grandfather had inspired the founding of the Abbey. Sometimes in doing one's duty as Patton did in liberating this town, we do more than we know! (In the picture above the article she is on the left with glasses on.)
